Great idea, Victor!  As more folk get involved with the site, it'll be interesting to see where this goes.

Johnson Reel Discussions / Re: Model 97
« on: January 06, 2016, 05:48:09 PM »
Hi, Dennis!  The Johnson 97 is quite a rare bird.  It strongly resembles the Model 98, but to the best of my knowledge, was never cataloged.  The 98 and, by extension, the 97, were marketed as "budget" or "entry-level reels.  They date from around 1968-70.  Probably could handle line in the 6-10 lb. test range.

Nice job of posting the catalog collection, Al!  I'm glad someone got around to doing what I don't know how to do with them

Welcome aboard, sweet tea!  I'm also retired, live in SW MO about 40 miles from the OK border.  Howdy, neighbor!  I look around some of the flea markets and pawn shops in my area, but Johnson reels are almost non-existent around here.  In the past year, I've found a Century 100A with no crank handle and a 710B that was only useful for parts. Period.

Johnson Reel Discussions / Re: True or False ?

Given the proximity of the n and b keys and of the r and g keys, looks like a typo to me, too.  I do lots of those.

"Sanga" is one I've never heard of, nor have I ever seen any documentation for such a model in my catalog collection.  As far as I'm aware of, the "big brother" to the 710 was the Sabra 130 series.  Not doubting your word, Al, but where did you find reference to a "Sanga" model?  I'm intrigued!

Johnson Reel Discussions / setting internal drag
« on: November 24, 2014, 07:55:08 PM »
Can anyone advise how to adjust the internal drag on the dual-drag models, such as Guide 155?  I know the adjustment is a hexnut on the driveshaft, but which way to tighten and which to loosen, please.  Many thanks!

Haven't seen it Matt, but I'd sure enough like to!

I've seen his ads on ebay.  He really has a treasure trove, doesn't he?  Looks like he's got enough Century 225 parts to build a reel from scratch!

I agree completely, guys!  There's enough of a history about Johnson reels to make a book.  Great idea!

Hi Waders and Matt!  I'm really tickled you guys have revived a Johnson collectors website!  I tend to stick with brandnames that I like...Oldsmobiles and Johnsons, for instance.  I enjoy using vintage equipment of any kind.
Matt, none of the factory literature I have makes any reference to a black Century.  The catalog reprints I have are all black/white photocopies, so colors aren't shown.  For example, Guide 155 was offered with an anodized red front cover and a black front cover that may have been painted, but that difference can't be distinguished with the copies I have.  Sorry I can't shed any "light" on a "dark" Century 100.
My catalog collection is presently in the hands of a local printer.  Several members of fishingtalks.com requested copies of the catalogs and parts lists, so I'm getting the collection duplicated.  It isn't cheap, but I feel like it's worth it.  As a matter of fact, it was a member of that website that steered me to this site.
I'm always available to provide any info on Johnson reels that is in my collection;  dates of production, part numbers, exploded drawings, whatever.

I have lived in MO most of my life, down in the Ozarks.  I'm 69 y.o., retired for over seven years.  I recall my Dad having a Citation 110 in the late 50's-early 60's.  I bought my first Johnson reel, a Century 225, in the mid 80's.  I was living in KC MO at the time.  I liked that 225 so well, I began collecting Johnsons anywhere I could find them.  Back then, you could find reels in any flea market or junk store.  I amassed a collection of nearly 100 Johnson reels of many different models, but sold most of them when I moved back to the Ozarks.  (Damn!)  I've taken the hobby up again and have over 40 Johnsons.  When I was collecting them in the 80's, I wrote to Johnson Fishing and requested catalogs.  A lady named Irene Uhde sent me a box of photocopies of Johnson reel catalogs from 1959 to 1989, which collection I still have, as well as parts lists with exploded drawings from 1950 to 1990.
