the johnson model 80 is the last of the sidewinders, a reel my stepfather loved. he believed the sidewinders were the best reels johnson ever produced, and if he were alive today he would still be fishing with one. i am rather fond of fishing with one of these as well. its a wonderful experience. if only we could get a modern version of this reel complete with anti reverse feature and faster retrieve speeds. maybe i should get to work on this ?

Great idea, Tim! May I buy reel #2?

In a conversation with Dick Braun (TZG) he mentioned that he was sure that Johnson had built the Model 80 prior to any of the other side winder models. ???

Here is a Demo 80 and a regular 80. Cover is different.

Nice article on your sidewinder's, Ron. I gotta put my Model 80 to work.

I'm bidding on one now on eBay. It just look interesting and will probably be a lot of fun
-
I'll stay outta your way, chinkelmann. Good luck, buddy!
-
No worries; whatever happens, happens. I almost bid on a Model 10 and 20 Sunday, but thought I'd try an 80 first

The Model 22 and 44 sidewinders are the pinnacle of the Johnson sidewinders, I think. They actually came after the Model 80, I believe.
-
I'll have to do some research on the 22's and 44's then too.
