Done,

Just didn't have my tongue in the right spot.  Evidently.

I picked up all of the (7) Sidewinders I have that are assembled.  2 of them actually worked.  As I mentioned, I've never done anything with them.  They just arrived, I gave them 2 nods and then set them aside.

I guess this is the start of my next class.  Sidewinder 101

I have a few Sidewinders.  Some I got in a lot of reels that I bought.  Up until this morning I have not spent much time playing with or working on any of them.

I have a 40A where the push button was force in, instead of out.  So basically the reel didn't work at all.  I completely disassembled the reel to see what makes it tick.

I discovered that the last person that had the reel apart installed the push button spring on the shaft where it goes and then inserted the shaft into the reel.  But, the shaft is supposed to be installed first and then that spring and the push button installed after from the rear of the reel.
That parts works now.

I can make the reel work with a different rotor assembly.  But not with the one that came with the reel.
I came on here to see what type pf rotor Chuck found in his 40A.  It's the same as the one that came with the reel.

So back into the garage to figure that out.

Congrats Gary. I know his inventory was a major buy, at least at one time. Good to have those parts in your hands.

Johnson Reel Discussions / Mat's Reel Repair Johnson Parts
« Last post by GaryWB on March 28, 2024, 03:48:37 PM »
Since John Fowler just mentioned he called Mat's Reel Repair inquiring about Johnson parts and was told they have sold all of them.

I'm in the process of buying Mat's Johnson parts.  He and I have talked about several times over the years.  I finally wrote him a couple of months back and told him I was interested.  IF, that was something he still wanted to do.

It's in the works, but all I've done so far is mail him a deposit.  He's packing stuff up.  So it will be sometime before I actually have any of his parts here.

Just letting you guys know what is going on.

Gosh. Never know what my remarks might spark on here, Even an Atom Bomb ! Got a good laugh from your reply. If it makes you feel any better, I was always to blame when I ran the combine for the custom harvester.
"John the Jinks" was my name and proud of it !!!  ::)

No mention of spooling that reel with any other than 6lb test line.

Maybe someone has physically tried it though and can shed some light on the subject

With some of the less complex Spincast Reels there is poor initiation of the drag. You might be fishing for fish where 4lb test is all you need. But you might be using a reel that takes six or eight lbs of tug to get the drag to let go. Not completely sure but I seem to remember the Zebco 202 and some of my Johnsons being this way. So  this example may affect what the manufacturer is willing to recommend. The other issue being the reels ability to brake line when casting.

My family constantly reminds me that I ain't no Einstine.
Ironically I had two Nick Names on the farm. I hated that all my Neighbors and hired folk called me by those names. One was "Wreck-em-all" and the other? "Don Don The Atom Bomb".

Nuf Said!

Einstein wondered about a lot of things. Take the plunge and try it. At least you won't end up with an atom bomb ! Just be sure and let us know how it goes .
