St. Croix / SC-3 Mustang Box and Paper
« on: April 10, 2019, 12:56:06 PM »
Dennis had already added pics of the reel so I just wanted to add pics of how it was boxed. Code on paper indicates reel was manufactured circa 1974. It is also interesting that flap under top lid indicates  reel was manufactured by St. Croix in Minneapolis rather than Johnson but the owner manual (posted under owner manuals) lists address for repairs or replacements as the service department in Mankato.

Model 97 (1968-1970) / Model 97 NIB
« on: March 28, 2019, 12:35:48 PM »
I was hoping when I acquired this “97”reel from a seller in Missouri, it would help provide info on whether or not it was only sold in Canada. But it only raises one more interesting question. As previously advised by Skip and Dennis, the “97” does not appear in any catalog. And as advised it is the same in how it was boxed and looked including docs with the exception of the front cover color and of course the model side badge compared to the “98”. I also have a NIB “98” so showed the “97” and “98” side by side. I included a couple of pics of 3 other later made NIB reels I have that show up in the 1979 catalog (710C) and in the 1980 catalog (Sprint 215 and Force 315) that Johnson was showing on the boxes their distribution name used for sale in Canada. What is interesting to me is the owner manual for the “97”. Until now I don’t recall ever seeing an owner doc that didn’t have a code number on it such as you can see on the “98” doc. There are no numbers whatsoever on the “97” doc and that seems strange. It appears to me in looking at these number codes on owner docs that Johnson indicated by the last 2 numbers the year product began and printing was made which seems to be the year before the reels appeared in a catalog. For example on the “98” doc, 355-767 tells me they began making the “98” reel and print materials in 1967 and of course the reel first appears in the 1968 catalog. So on the “97” owner doc, why no code numbers? That makes me wonder if maybe Johnson for whatever reason hadn’t figured out what to do with the “97” reel and it only maybe had a short lived limited production of them. Or is it just a glitch that no code appears? It is also interesting that on both the "97" and "98" parts schematics, the code for both front covers is V-22. You would think that a different front cover color would have a different part code! Hmmm!

Model 150A (1972-1976) / Commander 150A 1975 Version
« on: March 19, 2019, 12:40:38 PM »
Thanks to Gary I now have the later version of the 150A in my collection. The last picture shows the two badge differing versions. The one on the left is the version that appears in the 1972 catalog. The one on the right is the version that appears in the 1975 catalog. The only difference I can see between the two is the name badge and the placement of the word Commander compared to the model number and for some reason on the 1975 version, the bullseye is higher up on the push button. Thanks Gary.

Montgomery Wards / Montgomery Ward ART. NO. 60-6439A
« on: March 10, 2019, 04:28:01 PM »
Here is another Commander reel badged for Montgomery Wards. I bid on it but it went for more than I expected.  So these pics are what I downloaded from eBay. I wanted to post the pics to capture the reel on the site. This reel looks like it might be a bit earlier than the 60-6446 reel I posted. This real has a plain push button and the inventory number seems to be earlier.

Model 100B DLX (1995- 1996) / Century 100B DLX Parts
« on: December 04, 2018, 12:29:50 PM »
I recently acquired a decent used Century 100B DXL (made in the USA) and since I didn’t see any parts pictures posted and couldn’t locate a schematic, I decided to disassemble and post some pics. I was interested in two things. First if it was much different gearing wise from a 100B which it isn’t. And second, how the “Infinite Anti-Reverse” worked. In the last pic I tried to get a shot of the inside of the crank handle side plate shaft housing. I can see a bearing in there. It is pure speculation on my part but here is my guess on how the anti-reverse works. You can see in the picture a gap to the right between bearing roller and the bearing frame. When the crank shaft is turned counterclockwise (in viewing  the bearing looking from the inside of side plate as in this picture), the rollers somehow roll towards the gap on the right and loosen up allowing the shaft to turn. When trying to crank the shaft backwards or clockwise as in this view, I am guess the rollers move to the left and somehow  tighten up within the bearing and around the shaft and not let it turn. If anyone has any info on this anti-reverse mechanism, I would be interested. I have to say, this model appears to be very well made and seems to work very smoothly.Thanks.

Scout 95 (1981) / Scout 95 Pictures
« on: August 26, 2018, 05:51:10 PM »
Here are pictures of a Scout 95. I haven’t seen many of these ever come up for sale so even though it is rough I grabbed it. I love this drag knob system version. Easy to take apart. Unlike some other reels with the round drag knob that also had a C clip on the shaft, this reel doesn’t and has no provision for one. The handle that came on this is not like the handle shown in the catalog that has holes in it. So I don’t know if this was a very early version handle for this reel or simply a replacement for the one with holes that must have broken. I can’t imagine how you would break a handle. When I took it apart I left the inner most nylon portion of the drag shoe on the reel. It was tight and I didn’t want to risk cracking it trying to take it off. This reel has maybe the smoothest operating and adjustable drag of ones I have tried.

Model 205 (1981-1982) / Sprint 205 pictures
« on: August 23, 2018, 12:57:49 PM »
Since I hadn’t seen any posted, here are pictures of a Sprint 205. It is not pristine cosmetically but cost me less than a burger and fries at McDonalds and is fully functional. As Skip mentioned in another post, the Sprint 205 is a continuation of the Sprite 200 and 200A models. The gearing and mechanisms on the 205 reels are like the ones on the Sprite models with one major exception. The crank shaft extends clear across from one side to the other. I didn’t take this 205 completely apart but did include pictures to show the shaft mounted inside the reel. Disassembly of this reel is similar to the Sprite models in that while holding the handle, rotating the line pickup rotor counter clockwise allows removal from the drive shaft and allowing access to the cam bearing. One of the frustrations for me (and apparently the previous owner of the 205 gauging by the scratch marks on the front cover) is getting the front cover back on the reel. The removable side plate has a little tab that protrudes into the threads on the main frame. It usually doesn’t align perfectly with the threads and also tends to stick up a bit making it hard to get the front cover started threading on. I found that if you slightly loosen the back screw that holds the side plate on and gently squeeze the side plate and main frame alternate side together with your fingers holding the reel close to the threads, the front cover starts on much easier. Then you can retighten the screw. I tried to show the tab in the end picture.

Model 90 (1979) / Spirit 90 Pics
« on: July 31, 2018, 04:42:07 PM »
I haven’t seen many of these Spirit 90 reels come up for sale so when I saw this one listed for next to nothing, I grabbed it. I actually got two so will keep one and try and resell the other. Not in mint condition wise but everything works and I got to see what the insides look like.

Princess 100-A 1956 / Princess Century 100-A versions
« on: July 22, 2018, 04:11:10 PM »
We know that Johnson in an effort to quickly get to market on a Princess reel took a Century 100-A, painted it pink and put the name Princess on the front cover. The ones I have seen until now have the name Princess painted on the front cover. I recently came across a Princess Century 100-A reel that had the Princess name stamped on the front cover rather than painted. So a second version of the original Princess reel. So which one came first? I am guessing the one with the name stamped on the front cover. To me that would be a quicker way to get to market. And the cover with the painted name is much nicer and fancier looking so it probably came very shortly after the stamped cover one. And then the step up was to the Princess 100AP which was even fancier looking. And finally the Princess 100BP.  And with the later versions it looks like they improved the quality of the pink paint used. A deeper pink. Not so faded and not so prone to coming off.

Model 155 (1976-1978) / Model 155 Versions
« on: June 30, 2018, 12:45:12 PM »
Johnson made two versions of the Guide 155 reel. The red cover appears in the 1976 catalog and the black cover version in the 1977 and 1978 catalogs. The 1979 catalog has the Guide 155A that they went to. There are several differences between the two 155 versions. Externally the ‘76 version had the red cover, glossy black back cover with the side badge that included “MADE IN USA”, glossy black foot, a white button with “ACCU-CAST” on it,  and a fancier looking drag knob with thinner spikes (that often broke from what I see on occasional reels for sale). On the ’77-78 version, they switched to flat black for front and back covers as well as the button and foot and they moved and molded “MADE IN USA” and “ACCU-CAST” directly onto the back cover. It is easy to miss and I tried to show a picture that the foot on the black version is also ever so slightly longer than the foot on the red cover version (at least on the two I have). Internally the rotor nuts are slightly different appearance wise but the same functionally. The gearing design is the same but materials used differ. Johnson also changed how they packaged the two versions. They went from plastic inside the box to styrofoam. The plastic also was molded to include the insertion of a green storage bag inside the box. The styrofoam has no spacing for a bag so I assume they did not include one in the”77-78 version.

Unknown Distributors / Berkley 308 Fish-N-Fold II
« on: June 16, 2018, 08:21:47 AM »
I previously had seen just a 308 reel for sale without a rod. When researching that, I saw some comments on FT about this outfit and when I saw this one, I couldn't resist adding it to my collection. Not an unknown distributor but didn't know where else to post this. Kind of  neat outfit!

Johnson Reel Discussions / Johnson Fishing Rods
« on: June 06, 2018, 12:58:37 PM »
While I know this is a Johnson reels site, I am hoping someone may have a bit of information on Johnson fishing rods. I have two Johnson casting rods acquired with reels a while back at a garage sale that I am trying to establish aging on. While there is a lot of info on Johnson reels available, I cannot find much info on Johnson rods. Neither of these show up in any Johnson guide that happens to have rods listed that I have looked at. Both are 5"6" long. I think the white one is from the 1960's in the era of the Century and Citation. It came with a Johnson Laker reel on it. The red one came with a Century on it but looks older than that to me. I can make out the branding as "Johnson Reel Co" which sort of in my mind  coincides with the branding Johnson used on all of their Sidewinder boxes in the 1950's. Hard to read but the model looks to be 3302. Any info someone might have is appreciated. Thanks!

Johnson Reel Discussions / Johnson Reel Bags
« on: June 05, 2018, 11:36:33 AM »
Over the course of collecting Johnson reels, I have acquired many Johnson reel bags. Some came with boxed reels and others I just got separately. The ones not already with a boxed reel are great for storing my other unboxed reels. They have always been green and were either the felt type cloth like the one on the right in the picture or the smoother cotton type like the one on the left that came in the box with a new unused Sabra 130B. I recently came across a Johnson felt bag that is dark blue in color and just a bit larger than the green bags. Assuming bags were always included with reels rather than sold separately as an accessory by Johnson, does anyone know what reel this dark blue bag might have gone with?

40th Anniversary Model / 40th Anniversary Model Pictures
« on: May 29, 2018, 02:06:05 PM »
I know many members probably have this nice little reel. It looks good and works great! Dennis and Skip have mentioned in other posts about some reels having a little c clip retention ring on the bottom part of the drag knob shaft. So does this reel! I am not sure why Johnson put it there as it seems to me to serve no real purpose. You can see it in the end pictures. To remove the drag knob and shaft from the reel you have to take this c clip off. I can’t imagine there was a problem with the threaded drag knob shaft coming out that required a retention clip. Anyway, it is easy to get off and on. I use a small flat eyeglass screwdriver to get it off and a small needle nose pliers to get it on. It was interesting to me to also discover that unlike earlier Century reels where the drag knob and drag  numbered plate were not joined, on this model they are.
