Johnson Rod Discussions / Johnson Accu Rod
« on: February 01, 2021, 10:53:56 AM »
I will add a couple of rods I have. Brown one is the Accu rod and red one just says Johnson Reel Co. I would guess red one is older. Maybe 1950's? I got them both at a garage sale but don't remember what reels were on them.

Montgomery Wards / Montgomery Ward ART. NO. 16304
« on: December 18, 2020, 08:47:15 AM »
A recently acquired trade reel based on the 710B with the same handle, button lock and push button pin on the brand side plate. However it does have the front drain ports front cover like the later version 710A. Seems to have a different inventory model numbering system compared to other Wards or Hawthorne reels. Works good!

Model 140A (1971-1972) / Laker Model 140A Metal Lock Button
« on: July 27, 2020, 12:02:33 PM »
Thanks to David Bryan who pointed me in the direction of this reel, I was able to acquire a Laker 140A with a metal lock button. All of the buttons I have ever seen on Johnson reels were either white or black nylon buttons. Never a metal one. David says he has a Laker like this one with the metal button so a few are out there. Sort of unusual I would guess!

Unknown Distributors / Shy Poke S.M.230 with box
« on: June 20, 2020, 01:52:53 PM »
I was extremely fortunate to recently acquire a Shy Poke reel with the box. Both are in great condition. It was a bit of a challenge taking the reel apart as one of the side plate screw's slot had been damage so it would not hold the screwdriver. But with a little ingenuity I managed to eventually get it out with out damaging anything on the reel other than that screw which I replaced. I also did not remove the drag knob as for some reason it would not raise up to loosen the screw. Since the drag works well enough as is, I left it alone. The pinion shaft also has the non c clip retainer for the spring so left that alone also. The reel is a Century 100A with the earlier flat push button and a Centennial front cover. As you can see, the box has on it a reference to S & M Company, Minneapolis 13, Minnesota. So now the challenge is to figure out who that company was.

Cooks Premier / 3 Cook's variations/versions
« on: June 12, 2020, 02:51:33 PM »
Like Gary recently did, I was able to just acquire another nice Cook’s Premier reel. It is in nice shape and appears to be barely used. What attracted me to this one which was with four other not so nice Johnson reels , it is a different variation from the other two Cook's I have. So the three Cook’s I have demonstrate three different versions Johnson made for Cook’s. And comparing them to their Century counterparts, I was able to age them. The oldest is the one just acquired on the left with the front cover slots on top and the post handle. It compares to the Century 100A. The middle one is next in age and even though it still has the post handle rather than the sculpted one, it compares to the early 100B with the slots on the front of the cover.  And the one on the right is the newest in age and with the plank button and handle and with no slots on the front cover, it compares to a later 100B. So this shows me that Johnson made the Cook’s reel for them for several years. If you look at the last picture it also shows the crank handle side plates also have the same anti-reverse markings to their Century counterparts. Finally I find it interesting that the oldest Cook’s is more dull in gold color compared to the other two. I assume brighter gold color led to more sales.

Model 710B (1972-1978) / 710B button retention pin
« on: April 19, 2020, 12:00:14 PM »
Gary asked me a great question today about the pins holding the button in place on the 710B reel. I thought I would post my response since it is a difference between versions.  The 710 and early 710A both had the screw in metal pin to retain the button. The later 710A eliminated the screw in pin and went to a metal push pin. And then on the 710B they went from a metal to a nylon or plastic push pin. I have never taken it out as I didn't want to mar it but I am guessing the "cap" is just the outside visible end of the pin. It is hard to see in the pics below but the end of the pin that goes through the hole in the button is a bit smaller in diameter than the pin diameter of the portion between the button and the frame side. It is interesting that the 710B schematics refer to  part 726 as the button "screw" pin but it certainly looks like a nylon "push" pin to me. And both of my 710B reels are the same in that regard. They did the same thing with the Sabra reels going from metal screw to metal push pin to the nylon push pin on the 130B. But the 130B doesn't have that "cap" since the pin sits on the rounded edge of the frame.

Model 40A (1952) / Model 40A with drag
« on: March 19, 2020, 11:11:22 AM »
Being an avid Johnson collector, I love it when I come across a reel I had never seen before, heard of, or could not find any documentation about it. Thanks to "greenreel" pointing me to this one on eBay, this is my newest find. A well used Model 40A with a drag! The model 40 had a drag but all 40A reels that I have every seen, have, or read about in other collections or owner docs never indicated the 40A ever came with one. This one as you can see was well used by the original owner. I hope those rub marks on the inside are the result of fighting big fish!

Skipper 125 (1971-1978 / West Point Decal
« on: March 02, 2020, 02:35:23 PM »
Attached is a picture of a supposed NIB Skipper listed on eBay. It may be my old brain deteriorating but I seems I once saw another Johnson with a West Point decal. Does anyone know if this was a Johnson thing, or a dealer thing, or maybe just an owner ad? Thanks, Chuck

Silver and green versions side by side. Just stumbled across the green one at a garage sale this weekend.

Century 100B 45th Anniversary / Century 100B 45th Anniversary Reel
« on: August 05, 2019, 12:23:18 PM »
Usually these reels are green in color. Got this unusual silver colored one from a Canadian collector. One thing of note at least on this reel, shaft wouldn't slide back far enough as is to remove it from the frame. C clip blocks it. Need to remove c clip to get shaft worked out.

Mainly made in green and black colors, they apparently also made a brown and tan version.
