The 710 is the only Johnson reel that carried only a number as its name. The bigger model of the same design is the SANGA. It is just like the 710, only larger and beefier and holds more line. The SANGA is the only Johnson reel model that carries ONLY a lettered name--just the opposite of the 710.
Other information has the 710 listed as part of the "Citation" family and no record of the "Sanga"
Which is true?

2 other reels with numbers for the name were the 98 and the 088. There may be others that I'm not thinking of.

"Sanga" is one I've never heard of, nor have I ever seen any documentation for such a model in my catalog collection. As far as I'm aware of, the "big brother" to the 710 was the Sabra 130 series. Not doubting your word, Al, but where did you find reference to a "Sanga" model? I'm intrigued!

I ran into it on a blog yesterday and thought it sounded wrong, thus the true.false question. Now that I give it some more thought I believe that the author "Meant" Sabra instead of Sanga. I cannot find the blog today. I should have copied the URL and posted it.... sorry

Given the proximity of the n and b keys and of the r and g keys, looks like a typo to me, too. I do lots of those.

but the 98 and 088 have the word Johnson on the reel along with the number.
-
I know that there was also a model 97 reel that went along with the 88 and 98 series of reels.

True I have one it is identical to the 98 except for the red cover and the decal. I believe but am not sure these were made to be sold in Canada. I have a 720 that is identical to the 710 that I bought from someone in Canada and I saw a 555 that was sold from Canada that is identical to a 545.

The 088A has on a number.

there is also the extremely rare 089, i will dig mine out and post some pictures of it when i get a chance.
