No mention of spooling that reel with any other than 6lb test line.

Maybe someone has physically tried it though and can shed some light on the subject

With some of the less complex Spincast Reels there is poor initiation of the drag. You might be fishing for fish where 4lb test is all you need. But you might be using a reel that takes six or eight lbs of tug to get the drag to let go. Not completely sure but I seem to remember the Zebco 202 and some of my Johnsons being this way. So  this example may affect what the manufacturer is willing to recommend. The other issue being the reels ability to brake line when casting.

My family constantly reminds me that I ain't no Einstine.
Ironically I had two Nick Names on the farm. I hated that all my Neighbors and hired folk called me by those names. One was "Wreck-em-all" and the other? "Don Don The Atom Bomb".

Einstein wondered about a lot of things. Take the plunge and try it. At least you won't end up with an atom bomb ! Just be sure and let us know how it goes .

Good Morning. I have acquired a CM-6 and I also have another that I'm not sure the size. I'm looking to potentially add this reel to my spring Ultralight lineup and I wonder if 4lb line may work? I found this list in the archives but it seemed to be available for all of the CM reels. With no mention of 4 lb should I assume that it was not recommended?

Gary, glad the pics were of use. And I like your insight on that clip on the drag! Seems pretty logical as to why.

By the way Chuck, if I hadn't looked at the pictures you posted on the 235 I would still be out in the garage trying to figure it out.

I was trying to install the bearing (Part #148) on backwards.  My brain said that was the way it should go on.  Brain was wrong....again!

You saved my bacon.

I had a pinion gear someone installed on a drive shaft that was a wee bit longer.  Couldn't figure out why the rotor wouldn't return all the way.  Finally figured that out.  I compared it to another one I had and noticed that drive shaft was a little longer, etc.

I'm worn out now.  Between the repairs and writing.

I know this thread has been around for awhile.  But I was working on 2 different Sprint 235 reels and read all the comments.

My thoughts are:
On the original/older drag knobs they had the little protrusion and were not just rounded.  So there was a built in stop on the knob and it could only be turned from 0-8 on the drag dial.

With the newer drag knob, they are just round.  And if someone got a little Steve Martin (wild and crazy) they could back the drag screw completely out.  And the drag bar would end up falling out.

Not a huge deal if you have worked on the reels.  But to a novice, might be the end of the fishing trip.  So I think Johnson added that e-clip to prevent angry phone calls, etc.

About a year ago, I sent him a message on Fishingtalks, wanting a pic of a Johnson 155a with a yellow ribbon on the front, that he said he had.  I'd never seen one.  No response back. Not sure if he's a member on here or not. If his sons farming , maybe you could reach out to him somehow. Hope your doing well.     P.S. A friend of mine , who knows everybody , said he talked to him a yr ago but had to call him numerous times. So I guess he's still around.
