Model 40A (1952) / Nicer 40A with drag
« on: May 19, 2023, 03:22:35 PM »
Here is a nicer one than the previous one I posted. On this one, when I tightened the drag screw, the brass retaining washer came off inside. Kind of a job to get it back on as it is very small. Since it is a press on, I first flattened it and then managed using some needle nose pliers, to push it back on.

Chevron Model 130 / Chevron 130 pics

Here is one I recently obtained. Line spool part of the main frame. Saw no side screws so assumed the badge side plate is attached via some kind of tab. I saw a small slot that I thought maybe I could try and open it with but is very tight and didn't budge. So since the reel works fine, I decided to leave it alone. If I every come across another one, I will definitely pry it open. You can see on the foot bottom Hong Kong.

Model 100B (1963-1979) / My Two Black 100B Reels
« on: March 02, 2023, 09:31:50 AM »
Not sure why I needed more than one overpriced reel but I have two Black 100B reels. Foolish I guess! Not as nice as the mint one David has but still pretty nice. Appropriately store them in Johnson green felt bags. Still curious like others why the color black!

Princess 100-A 1956 / Princess 100-A with overpainted Century 100-A parts
« on: January 04, 2023, 10:01:51 AM »
We know Johnson very quickly moved to market a pink Princess reel. And that they did so using the existing Century 100-A by painting it pink prior to establishing and marketing the Princess 100AP and subsequent 100BP reels. This reel provides the evidence of Johnson overpainting some of the Century 100-A parts to get the princess out quickly. Interesting that they used a raw Century front cover for example to paint and stamp the name and didn't use a raw side plate to do the same. And this side plate has not been painted pink after manufacture!

Model 100 (1955-1956) / Black pickup pin slider
« on: February 26, 2022, 12:17:54 PM »
It appears when Johnson produced the Century 100 with either a black or white line spool, they also matched the slider portion of the pick up pin in material and color. Other than the 100, I don't think I have seen any other Johnson model with the black pick up pin slider. Might be some however.

Princess Model 100BP (1963 -1979) / Princess Model 100BP
« on: August 04, 2021, 11:52:03 AM »
Not sure why I haven't posted pics of this model before so doing it today. I have had this reel for a few years now and it still intrigues me. If you look at the last pic you cans see the straight groove on the crank side plate. Can't figure out how that would have gotten there. Guess I need to look for another one in good shape that I won't need a bank loan to get! Dating the timing of these Princess reels is not easy. The first I found a 100-A Princess was in the 1959 Catalog. The Princess 100AP first appeared in the 1960 catalog and the 100AP owner doc I have shows a form #71-860 further confirming the 1960 datei I found the AP model as late as 1963 in docs but nothing after that. And I have never seen any doc on a 100BP. So do not know when it first came out or when it ended. But I have a feeling it disappeared fairly quickly as maybe sales were not as strong as Johnson had hoped. Any info anyone has on dating is appreciated!

Princess 100-A 1956 / Princess Century 100-A versions #2
« on: August 03, 2021, 11:49:32 AM »
This collecting thing never ends!!! I now have/had (minus one) 4 variations of the front cover Princess name displayed 100-A reel. The first is with the Princess name simply stamped on the front cover. The second variation is when Johnson started painting the name on the front cover rather than stamping. And the original painted variation letter size was the same as the original stamped letter size. It is the middle reel in the first pic. I sold it since it appeared someone had taken the front cover and side plates and put them on a regular Century. But it does show the second variation front cover. Then   Johnson next increased the size of the painted letters keeping the location pretty much in the same location as the previous stamped and small painted letter variations. Finally I think the last variation was moving the painted name to fit between the slots as shown in the 2nd pic, right reel. Until I find another variation, I think they then moved to the 100AP and finally the 100BP. Another quirk I think is while I know the papers that came with a 100AP identified it as such and I assume the same with the 100BP (although I don't have 100BP papers), I have never seen a Princess box with a model number on it other than "100-A". Don't know if they ever made a 100AP or 100BP designated box.

A Spinmaster Model 34 Johnson trade reel based on a Laker 140B. I have no clue as to what store might have sold this.

Model 97 (1968-1970) / Main Shaft Retention
« on: February 10, 2021, 01:40:26 PM »
Sometimes an enlightening revelation suddenly hits you on the head if you are lucky! Today while messing with my 97 I suddenly realized what I am used to seeing on other reels like a Century or Sabra or whatever to keep the shaft in the open position for line casting was not visible on the 97. On other reels, the front face of the shaft housing has two levels that engage with a mechanism inside the rotor that locks the shaft open for casting and when the shaft is turned, disengages allowing the shaft to retreat enabling line retrieval. On the 97 (and 98 as well) the front face of the shaft housing is smooth and there is no mechanism inside the rotor. Inside the gear housing compartment where the back end of the shaft housing protrudes, a wire clip goes around it. On the schematic, this wire is part # V-10 and called a "Block". Also on the shaft where the two different shaft diameters meet, a portion of the larger shaft has been machined. So I am guessing when the button is pushed moving the shaft forward, it engages the wire clip at the machined section "blocking" it and preventing it from backing up which allows line casting. Then when the shaft is turned, the wire clip disengages from the machined shaft  section allowing it to return to normal line retrieval operation. Nifty! I wonder what other Johnson reels also use this cheaper method of shaft retention for casting?
