Sprint 215 Pictures

Among a group of reels listed as not operating and for parts only was this Sprint 215. There was a lot of side to side play in the crank arm shaft that did not keep the crank gear always in contact with the pinion gear. So after disassembling the reel, I put the crank screw on the end of the arm, gave it a couple of light taps with the end of a screw driver to reseat the shaft further into the handle and eliminated the side to side play. So now the reel is fully functional. One interesting thing on this reel was the anti-reverse on/off feature Johnson put on many reels like this one from the early ‘80s era. The knob on the outside has two tabs that fit into the inside of the side plate. When turned off, the tab pushes the anti-reverse pawl away not allowing the tab on the pawl to engage with the back of the crank gear. When turned off, the pawl can move forward towards the gear and engages to prevent reverse cranking. In the pictures you can first see the pawl in the off position and then in the on position.
