SC-3 Mustang / Johnson Citation 110B
« on: July 15, 2017, 01:53:19 PM »
I had a Citation that needed cleaning so I did a side by side. I found that most parts are interchangeable. These two aren't exactly alike, but the Citations have all sorts of small variations. I didn't find any parts on the Mustang that I haven't seen on one Citation or another. Obviously the color and name are different, but the one major difference is the tooth count on the gears. The Mustang crank gear has 45 teeth and the pinion gear has 16 teeth. The Citation crank gear has 35 teeth and the pinion gear has 12 teeth. Other than the teeth count the gears are the same, so you could replace the Mustang gears with Citation gears as a set.

Nice side by side! Why do you suppose Johnson varied teeth count on the gears like you have here and happened on other reel models? It couldn't have had a huge impact on retrieval speed. The gear ratio on your Mustang is roughly 2.8 and on the Citation 2.9 if you divide crank gear number by pinion gear number.

Good job, Dennis!  I may have to look for one of those ponies.   ;)

Hm!  Kinda figgered that.  Once in a while, I get lucky, but not often.  I've scored three pretty good rods, for cheap, recently.  Am I on a roll?
