Laker 140B pictures
« on: May 29, 2017, 12:32:06 PM »
A Laker 140B which certainly has been used but remains fully functional and fishable. I really like the drag system on the Laker Models 140, 140A and 140B. The shaft on the drag knob is designed as a cam which applies pressure or lack of to the drag bar. The drag is not adjustable beyond the cam function but seems to work well if reel is clean on these models. Johnson changed the drag system a bit on the later Laker II Model 140C reels to be adjustable the same as Century or Citation drag systems. Also on this model, although I haven't seen any schematics to confirm it, it appears Johnson moved away from the earlier multi point pick up rotors they used on the 140 and 140A models to the more common single pin pickup rotor like they used on the Laker II Model 140C. In catalogs Johnson referred to the multiple point rotors for their 140 and 140A models but in catalog descriptions of the 140B, that is no longer mentioned.

Good pictures and description Chuck. Almost makes me want to go out and get one. Tim did a blog on the Laker reels back in March 2015 on the Fishing Talks blog, can be seen here: https://www.fishingtalks.com/johnson-laker-reels-2055.html
I've only bought one of these and that was a model C in a bag of Johnson parts reels, it's still in the bag along with a couple of Skippers. Guess I'll take a closer look now that you have inspired me Chuck.
Thanks for this blog, keep 'em coming.

Dennis, Thanks for the link. I read it and agree with the 140B and 140C being pretty good. I previously have posted pics of my 140C on that thread on this site. The fishing talks blog also brings up a good point about the plastic ring on the line spool on 140 and 140A as well as on other reels like the 88 series. Without that plastic, those reels will not cast. I learned the hard way to ask sellers to provide a picture of the line spool. Just asking didn't always get me the truth about the spool/reel.
