1966 Catalog 110B picure
« on: February 07, 2017, 02:01:51 PM »
In the 1966 Catalog in the catalog section of this site, the picture of the 110B appears to have both the ribs and the white stripe on the front cover. Does that suggest that a 1966 model could have come with either a rib cover or a cover with the white stripe? Or did they actually make a front cover with both ribs and the white strip? Thanks.

Skip, I actually just bought a 110B that appears based on button and handle to be a 1966 or 1967 model. It has a ribbed cover with a white button and handle. That is why I asked the question. The 1966 catalog posted is in black and white but if you look at the Citation picture, you can make out both ribs and the white stripe on the cover. The 1967 catalog sort of looks that way also. So I am wondering if that was Johnson's way of suggesting the 1966/1967 model Citation could come with either the ribbed cover or the cover with a white stripe. The 1965 catalog shows the 110B with black button and handle and the ribbed cover. The 1968 catalog shows it with white button and handle with a white stripe cover. Trying to see if I bought an original or another Frankenreel.
Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck, I looked at 19 Citation 110's on eBay and found three different front covers.  #1-ribs, 4 long slots on the side, near the body, #2-no ribs, 4 long slots, as #!, #3-no ribs, carved (white) ring near the front of the side, 5 small slots at the break between the front and the side.  I found no examples that combined the ribs and the carved ring.  IMHO, the illustration in the 1966 catalog was a case of "artistic liberty", since it was a hand-drawn sketch, instead of a photo of an actual reel.  Photos I believe, sketches not so much.  It's my belief that the 4 long slots, no ribs is likely a 110 cover, the 4 long slots with ribs a 110A cover, and the no ribs, carved ring, 5 small slots a 110B cover.
As I've said before,so MANY parts interchanged throughout the Citation 110/Century 100 production run, and these reels have had so many owners, it's hard to know what you've got.  Heck, even the side plates interchanged!  You can put Century sideplates on a Citation and vice versa!  During my Citation research on eBay, I came across a Citation 110B with a front cover, drag indicator and drag pointer from either a Century 135 or a Sprint 235!  The left sideplate had been painted black, and the lettering rather crudely scraped clean.  Frankenreel!
Ya just never know, bud!
