Century Pro 345 Two Styles
« on: January 10, 2017, 07:49:09 PM »
I acquired a 2nd Century Pro and found a couple differences.

1. You'll notice the one on the left has a glossy red front cap. The one on the right has a matte (having a dull or lusterless surface) red cap.

2. The one on the left has a metal tag above the push button that says  Johnson. The one on the right has Johnson GRAPHITE and a fish logo stamped on the plastic above the push button.

I've found a third style, it's the same as the one with the Johnson GRAPHITE and a fish logo stamped on the plastic above the push button. This one has a star drag. These reels were only in the 83 & 84 catalogs, so the million dollar question is: did Johnson put this star drag on or did someone add it at a later date?

Dennis, I have a NIB 345 and your post made me curious. So I dug mine out to look at it. It has the round drag knob. I also posted the owners manual that is with it which also shows the round knob. And if I am reading the numbers correctly, it was published in 1983. And in looking at the 1990 and 1992 parts catalogs you posted, they also have the round knob.  So a fun thing to ponder about the star drag. If I had to guess, I would pick Johnson put it on using up parts at end of production run. Not sure why someone would switch out round knob for the star. But who knows.

Gary, I would offer up that Dennis is the most prolific master of reel collecting and finding various versions!

How about the title of Grand Reel Hunter?
